New policy cuts solar panel prices in Pakistan

Solar panel costs in Pakistan have decreased after recent government policy updates, offering short-term savings for buyers. Systems now cost Rs35,000 to Rs175,000 less, with a 5 kW setup priced at Rs500,000 to Rs550,000 and a 10 kW system above Rs800,000.

The drop follows the government’s decision to slash payments for excess solar power fed into the grid to Rs10 per unit and apply new billing terms for users. Officials say this aims to curb rising electricity costs, but solar experts warn it could backfire.

The Pakistan Solar Association (PSA) claims the policy doubles the payback period for grid-connected systems from 1.5 to 3 years, making off-grid or hybrid systems with batteries more appealing.

PSA Chairman Waqas Moosa urged the government to consult stakeholders, arguing the changes risk slowing solar adoption and raising power prices for grid users.
