Pakistan declares February 5 public holiday for Kashmir Day

The federal government has announced February 5 as a public holiday to observe Kashmir Solidarity Day. The State Bank of Pakistan has also confirmed that it will remain closed in observance of the occasion.

As per an official notification, all government offices, banks, and educational institutions across the country will remain shut.

The holiday is observed annually to express solidarity with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Public rallies, seminars, and human chains are scheduled in major cities, including Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi.

Political leaders and activists are expected to participate in demonstrations highlighting Pakistan’s position on the Kashmir issue.

The federal government had previously confirmed February 5 as a holiday in its 2025 calendar.

Provincial administrations, including Sindh, have also declared a complete closure of government and semi-government institutions.

Markets, schools, and public spaces will be closed, while key roads may experience traffic disruptions due to planned processions.

Since 1990, Pakistan has observed Kashmir Solidarity Day to advocate for what it calls the “right to self-determination” for Kashmiris.

The longstanding dispute over Kashmir remains a key source of tension between Pakistan and India, with Islamabad repeatedly calling for a resolution based on United Nations resolutions.
