Heavy fines announced for waste disposal violations in Karachi

The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) has authorized its field officers to impose fines ranging from Rs50,000 to Rs500,000 on individuals and businesses that violate waste disposal regulations. The move is part of ongoing efforts to improve cleanliness and curb environmental pollution in Karachi.

SSWMB Managing Director Tariq Ali Nizamani said assistant directors working in the field have been appointed as inspectors under the Sindh Local Government Act, allowing them to take legal action against those who fail to follow waste management rules.

According to the board, Karachi produces more than 14,000 tonnes of municipal waste every day, making stricter enforcement necessary to prevent illegal dumping and improve waste disposal across the city.

The board also plans to propose making waste management training mandatory for businesses before their trade licenses can be renewed. The training will focus on waste segregation, recycling and proper disposal methods.

Meanwhile, the Sindh government has allocated 3,000 acres in Dhabeji for a modern landfill site to ensure the scientific disposal of municipal, industrial and medical waste. Studies under the World Bank-funded Solid Waste Emergency & Efficiency Project (SWEEP) are also in progress to develop long-term solutions for hazardous waste management.

In addition, the board has proposed setting up designated animal sacrifice sites in every union committee before the next Eid ul Adha to improve waste collection and maintain better public hygiene across Karachi.
