Karachi to introduce app to improve fire emergency response

Karachi’s city administration has decided to introduce a dedicated mobile application to consolidate fire safety information for commercial buildings, shopping malls and major public places to improve emergency response in the city.

The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, where progress on the ongoing fire safety inspection of commercial properties was reviewed.

Officials said the new application will combine data from all departments involved in disaster management and fire safety. During emergencies, rescue teams will be able to quickly access real-time details about a building’s safety measures and available facilities through a central system, helping them respond more quickly and in a coordinated manner.

The meeting was informed that sub-divisional fire safety audit committees, operating under assistant commissioners, are continuing inspections of commercial buildings, shopping centres and other major public facilities across Karachi.

So far, more than 800 buildings have been inspected and their details uploaded to the Fire Safety Audit Portal. Officials added that notices have already been issued to buildings that failed to meet safety requirements, instructing them to fix the issues without delay.

The participants also reviewed plans to include additional information in the system to further improve emergency response and disaster management. This extra data is expected to help rescue teams act more efficiently during fires and other emergencies.

The commissioner instructed officials to accelerate the citywide safety inspections and emphasized that all concerned departments must fully support the process.

Officials further said that KMC chief fire officer, Rescue 1122, Civil Defense and the Sindh Building Control Authority will take part in the process and help identify high-risk buildings. Civil Defense has also been assigned to prepare a list of structures that lack proper fire safety arrangements.
