Private school in Karachi faces action over illegal fee collection

The Directorate of Inspection and Registration of Private Institutions, Sindh, has issued notices to all three campuses of a private school in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi, over alleged violations of fee regulations.

The action followed repeated complaints from parents, who claimed the school was charging tuition fees above the approved limit, collecting annual fees unlawfully, and not providing mandatory fee concessions to eligible students.

According to the notices issued by the Additional Director of Registration Prof. Rafia Mallah, the school collected tuition fees higher than those approved by the registration authority. The Directorate also found that the institution failed to offer fee concessions to at least 10 percent of its enrolled students, as required under the relevant rules.

The school management has been directed to immediately stop collecting the unauthorized fees. It has also been ordered to refund the excess amount collected from parents within 15 days and grant fee concessions to eligible students in line with the law.

The Directorate warned that failure to comply with these instructions could lead to legal action under Section 8 of the Sindh Private Educational Institutions (Regulation and Control) Ordinance, which allows the authority to suspend or cancel the school’s registration certificate.

Officials said the Directorate had earlier served show-cause notices over the alleged illegal fee collection, but the school’s management failed to provide a satisfactory response.

The school representatives were later called for a formal hearing. During the proceedings, they were unable to justify the collection of excess tuition and annual fees or submit documentary evidence in support of their position.

Following the hearing, the Directorate decided to move forward with disciplinary action against the private school.
