NEPRA increases electricity prices by Rs0.08 per unit across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a minor increase of Rs0.08 per unit in electricity prices for consumers nationwide, including those in Karachi, under the monthly fuel cost adjustment for August.

According to NEPRA’s official notification, the revised rate will be reflected in electricity bills for October.

The adjustment, which aligns with government policy, will also apply to K-Electric consumers. The hike is lower than the Rs0.19 per unit increase earlier sought by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA).

NEPRA clarified that this revision is part of the routine monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism.

The CPPA had earlier reported that 14.22 billion units of power were generated in August, with 13.715 billion units supplied to distribution companies at a cost of Rs7.50 per unit, slightly above the reference cost of Rs7.31 per unit.

Meanwhile, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan has moved the Sindh High Court against NEPRA’s decision allowing K-Electric to recover Rs74 billion in losses from electricity theft and unpaid bills through consumer tariffs, calling it an unfair burden on paying customers.
