Punjab extends winter vacations as severe cold persists

The Punjab government has decided to extend winter vacations for schools and colleges across the province, following an assessment of the weather situation and related safety concerns.

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat shared the decision in a statement, explaining that it was made on the recommendation of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority. The PDMA has issued a warning of a prolonged cold spell, with extremely low temperatures expected in the coming week.

He said the move is aimed at safeguarding students, as temperatures are likely to remain unusually low in many parts of Punjab. According to the minister, educational institutions will now reopen on January 19.

Over the past few days, speculation and reports about possible changes in the winter break have been circulating on social media. In response, the education department reminded the public that any official updates regarding school schedules are issued only through authorized government channels.

Parents, students, and teachers have been urged to rely on official announcements and avoid spreading unverified information about school calendars.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has already warned residents about harsh weather conditions, especially during the night and early morning hours, and has advised people to take precautionary measures across the province.
