GILGIT: A large section of the Karakoram Highway in Upper Hunza’s Morkhun area was washed away by river loss on Friday, cutting off the land route between Pakistan and China, the Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) government said.
The damage was caused by a surge in river flow from accelerated glacial melting due to rising temperatures. The swollen rivers have also triggered flooding in parts of G-B, threatening infrastructure and public safety.
Government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq confirmed that a section of the KKH had become blocked and that Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan had ordered immediate repair work. Teams have been sent to Morkhun for emergency repairs.
The KKH is a vital trade and travel link between the two countries.
In Skardu, rescue teams are still searching for tourists missing after a boat capsized in the Zhouq Kachura area.
Authorities believe glacial runoff increased water levels in the lake, contributing to the accident. Boating has been banned under Section 144, and action is being taken against violators.
Since June, G-B has been hit by floods caused by cloudbursts, glacial lake outbursts, and heavy monsoon rains.
Officials warn that with the monsoon ongoing and temperatures climbing, further climate-related disruptions are likely, urging residents and tourists to stay alert and follow safety advisories.
