Punjab announces mandatory e-tagging for all vehicles

Maryam Nawaz Sharif has given approval for mandatory electronic tagging, or e-tagging, of all vehicles across Punjab, including motorcycles, as part of new security steps.

The decision was made during a high-level meeting on law and order. Officials updated the chief minister on plans aimed at improving monitoring and strengthening enforcement. She instructed the authorities to present a detailed micro-security plan within seven days.

Along with vehicle e-tagging, approval was also granted for the creation of a Punjab Cybercrime Investigation Unit. This unit will feature a special support cell for women and children who fall victim to online crimes, as well as online crime centers at the district level.

Security at entry points into the province will also be tightened. Plans include installing searchlights, setting up rooftop surveillance at check posts, and deploying drone monitoring systems. The process to acquire advanced drone defense systems has already begun.

Law enforcement agencies have been directed to continue combing operations against criminal elements and to improve the training and equipment of the Riot Management Police. Security standard operating procedures for Youm-e-Ali will be finalized after consultations with religious scholars.

These steps form part of a wider plan to reinforce law enforcement and enhance public safety throughout Punjab.
