Karachi braces for intense heatwave as temperatures feel like 50°C

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned of a heatwave affecting Karachi and several parts of Sindh on Saturday. Temperatures in the city are expected to rise above 41°C on Monday and reach around 40°C on Sunday. Most areas of the province are likely to face hot to extremely hot and dry conditions.

Karachi could see its hottest day on Saturday, with the “feels-like” temperature possibly climbing to 50°C. The actual temperature may reach around 38°C in the city and up to 40°C in suburban areas. During the afternoon, the “feels-like” temperature is expected to stay between 49°C and 50°C.

According to the three-day forecast, humidity levels will remain high from Saturday through Monday. On Saturday, humidity could peak at about 45%. On Sunday, it may rise to 70% in the morning. By Monday, humidity is likely to stay between 40% and 50% during the day, dropping to around 20% to 30% in the evening.

Maximum temperatures during these three days are expected to range between 36°C and 41°C. Some relief may come in the evenings as sea breezes return, though humidity could increase again at night due to low wind speeds.

The PMD also noted that central and upper regions of Sindh will continue to experience intense heat from Saturday to Sunday. Areas such as Jamshoro, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Kashmore, Ghotki, Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze, Jacobabad, Larkana and Sukkur are likely to see temperatures 3°C to 5°C above normal.

Along with the heat, dust storms and strong winds are expected over the weekend in districts including Jacobabad, Larkana, Kashmore, Shikarpur and Sukkur. The Met Office warned that these gusty, dust-filled winds could damage weak structures, construction sites and solar panels.

The public, especially children, women and elderly people, has been advised to take precautions during this period of extreme heat. People should avoid direct sunlight during the day and drink plenty of water. Farmers have also been urged to plan their activities carefully and ensure proper care for their livestock.
