At least 15 newborn babies have died after a fire broke out at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on Wednesday morning.
The fire broke out inside the nursery of the hospital’s gynaecology ward. According to rescue officials, an air conditioner compressor reportedly exploded, causing the blaze.
Initial reports said the fire started at around 7:00 am on August 26.
Emergency and rescue teams quickly reached PIMS and began efforts to bring the fire under control. They also secured the affected part of the hospital.
Geo News, quoting rescue sources, reported that at least 15 newborn babies had died in the incident. Reuters also reported the same preliminary death toll, citing the Pakistani broadcaster.

The number of casualties could change as authorities continue to assess the situation. Some later reports have also suggested that the death toll may be higher.
Initial information suggests that a problem with the nursery’s air conditioning system may have caused the fire. However, authorities have not yet released the findings of a formal investigation into what exactly triggered the blaze.
The incident is expected to raise concerns over fire safety arrangements, electrical systems and emergency response procedures at one of Islamabad’s major government hospitals.
PIMS provides maternity, neonatal and children’s healthcare services and treats patients from Islamabad and nearby areas.
