  • WhatsApp has introduced the feature to send and receive HD videos, catching up with other apps.
  • The rollout is gradual, with availability varying by region. Currently, HD videos are accessible in Pakistan.
  • Users can now choose 720p video quality when sending a clip, improving upon the default 480p option.

After introducing the ability to send HD images, WhatsApp has now added the feature for sending and receiving HD videos, catching up with other apps that already offer this capability. While some apps have had this feature for a while, WhatsApp is finally joining the club.

Recently, WhatsApp enabled support for high-resolution images, and they had also mentioned that HD videos were in the works. Now, they are delivering on that promise.

The rollout is happening gradually, as is customary, so it might take time to reach all regions globally. However, the HD video feature is already available in Pakistan.

When sending a video, you can now choose 720p video quality instead of the default 480p. Similar to photos, an HD button will appear above the video clip, alongside editing options.

Although HD videos on WhatsApp don’t significantly impact size or quality, there is a slight improvement. For instance, a 2MB video might increase to around 3.8MB with the HD option.

Like HD images and other media on WhatsApp, HD videos are protected by end-to-end encryption. Recipients of HD videos will see a noticeable HD badge, indicating the enhanced quality of the content.
