Karachi: The cold wave in Karachi has increased. According to Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predictions, strong winds would sweep through the city irregularly.
The minimum temperature in the financial hub has been recorded at 10.5°C, with the weather expected to stay cold and dry over the next 24 hours.
Humidity is currently at 65%, and winds blowing from the northeast at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour are likely to keep the temperature between 9°C and 11°C.
On Monday, Karachi was ranked as the third most polluted city globally, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 234, according to Swiss air quality monitor IQAir. This level is classified as “very unhealthy” by the organization.
The concentration of toxic PM2.5 pollutants fine particulate matter capable of entering the bloodstream when inhaled was measured at 159 µg/m³. A figure that is 31.8 times higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended limits.
The falling air quality is likely influenced by the colder weather, as lower temperatures trap dust and pollutants closer to the ground.
Karachi has repeatedly ranked among the most polluted cities in the world in recent months, though it is not alone. Lahore also frequently appears on IQAir’s list, and today recorded an AQI value of 162, which is classified as “unhealthy.”
