Solar power becomes Pakistan’s largest source of electricity in 2025

In the first four months of this year, solar farms contributed an average of 25.3% to Pakistan’s total utility electricity supply.

Citing Ember data reported by Reuters, the report highlights a remarkable shift, solar energy has moved from being Pakistan’s fifth-largest electricity source in 2023 to the top spot in 2025.

It further notes that Pakistan is now among fewer than 20 countries worldwide where solar power supplies a quarter or more of monthly electricity needs.

Globally, solar accounts for about 8% of power generation, compared to roughly 11% in China, 8% in the U.S., and 7% in Europe.

Only 17 countries have ever achieved a 25% or higher monthly share of electricity from solar, with Pakistan joining Australia and Chile as the only non-European nations on that list.

From 2022 to 2024, Pakistan’s imports of solar equipment from China surged dramatically, growing five times from approximately 3,500 megawatts (MW) to a record 16,600 MW, according to the report.
