Shaheen Afridi’s T20 captaincy under threat ahead of T20 World Cup

A local newspaper reported that Pakistan’s star bowler, Shaheen Afridi, might lose his captaincy ahead of the T20 World Cup starting in June this year.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has been advised to consider a change in leadership due to Shaheen’s team, Lahore Qalandars, performing poorly in the ongoing ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 9).

Some argue that Shaheen, at 23, is too young for the responsibility, while others fear a last-minute change could harm the team’s performance. The final decision rests with the chairman.

If Shaheen is replaced, wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan is a likely candidate for captaincy, although former captain Babar Azam is also considered.

Under Shaheen’s captaincy, Qalandars won consecutive PSL titles in 2022 and 2023. The 2024 T20 World Cup will start on June 1 with a new format featuring 20 teams, with Pakistan and India facing off on June 9 in New York.

England is the defending champion, having won the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia by defeating Pakistan in the final.
