Rainy spell likely to begin in Karachi from tomorrow: PMD

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast light to moderate rain, along with wind and possible thunderstorms, in Karachi on Monday. The showers are expected to continue through Tuesday, offering much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave.

According to the PMD, Karachi is likely to remain hot and humid over the next 24 hours, with partly cloudy skies. Temperatures may climb as high as 37°C, with current humidity levels around 72%. Winds are blowing at 18 km/h in the city.

The PMD noted that while not widespread, rain may occur at a few isolated spots in Karachi and is expected to vary in intensity.

Earlier, meteorologists had said that a westerly system is affecting the upper and central regions of the country and is likely to continue through Sunday and Monday. They predicted dry and hot conditions across most areas, with intense heat in the plains.

However, isolated areas in North-East and South Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, parts of Sindh and Balochistan, as well as Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan, could see some dust storms or thunderstorms accompanied by rain.

Rainfall was recorded in cities such as Gujrat, Mangla, Sialkot, Islamabad, Murree, Mir Khani, Kalam, Dir, Drosh, Rawalakot, and Gupis.

Turbat and Pasni were the hottest places on Saturday, with temperatures hitting a scorching 49°C.

Meanwhile, Karachi’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 112, with PM2.5 concentration measured at eight times above the annual safety limit set by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
