Rain, thunderstorm expected in Karachi today: PMD

Karachi is expected to face gusty winds and potential thunderstorms over the next two days, with light rain anticipated in parts of the city today, according to the Meteorological Department.

The forecast predicts warm and humid conditions for the next 24 hours, with daytime temperatures ranging from 35°C to 37°C.

Winds are blowing from the northwest at around 8 km/h, and the current humidity stands at 43%. The lowest temperature recorded in the last 24 hours was 28°C.

On Monday morning, the city got a brief break from the recent heatwave as strong winds stirred up dust clouds and brought light rain to areas like Manghopir, offering a short-lived relief from the heat.

Residents reported that the early morning winds and dust helped cool the air and slightly improved the overall atmosphere.

Weather alerts had already warned of similar conditions across southern Sindh, including Karachi.

Further inland in Sindh, severe dust storms caused destruction in several towns such as Naushahro Feroze, Shahpur Chakar, Sanghar, and Hyderabad.

The storm resulted in two fatalities: Arshad Malik in Padidan, who died after a wall collapsed on him, and a woman named Sumbul in Kot Bahadur village, who lost her life when the roof of her home caved in.

In Bhai Khan Babbar village, fierce winds sparked a fire that destroyed more than a dozen mud houses. Due to a delayed emergency response, villagers were forced to put out the fire largely on their own.

The Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) reported that 79 grid feeders went offline during the storm, cutting electricity in large parts of Hyderabad. Water supply in several areas was also disrupted.
