Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced that 240 electric buses will be distributed across 24 districts in southern Punjab as a top priority.
The decision was made during a special meeting held to assess progress on various transport projects and the ongoing electric bus initiative.
During the session, CM Maryam Nawaz highlighted the need for balanced development across the province, stating that “villages must be brought at par with major urban centres” and that “all districts are equal.”
She instructed officials to plan routes based on public commuting patterns to ensure the service benefits the most people.
In the first phase, 240 electric buses will be dispatched to the selected districts. Between August and October, an additional 500 electric buses will be rolled out in key cities including Lahore, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Multan, and Rawalpindi.
By the end of the year, a total of 600 buses are expected to be in operation province-wide, with 400 of them designated for the Punjab Clean Air Programme in Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Kasur, and Lahore.
The meeting also included updates on major infrastructure developments, such as the Gujranwala Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.
The BRT will stretch over 22 kilometers from Rahwali to Aimanabad, featuring 28 stations and 80 feeder buses. Officials also discussed the possibility of extending the route to Gakhar Mandi and setting up four electric bus depots to support operations.
In addition, updates on Faisalabad’s Orange and Red Line transit systems were presented. The Red Line will run 23.4 kilometers with 24 stations and is expected to carry more than 185,000 passengers daily.
The Orange Line, spanning 29 kilometers with 21 stations, is projected to serve around 111,000 daily riders. The Red Line route has been extended to connect Faisalabad Industrial Estate with Salami Chowk, following CM Maryam Nawaz’s instructions.
