Punjab schools, colleges to resume classes from May 12 after ceasefire

All public and private schools, colleges, and universities in Punjab are set to reopen on Monday, May 12, after being closed due to recent tensions between Pakistan and India.

Punjab’s Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat confirmed the reopening in a statement on Sunday, saying normal classes will resume as the security situation has improved.

The closures were initially imposed on May 7 following Indian drone attacks in parts of Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), which led the education department to suspend academic activities for safety reasons.

“The safety of students and staff remains our top priority,” the minister stated. “Now that the situation has stabilised, academic activities will proceed without further delay.”

These developments also caused delays in several board examinations. Papers in subjects such as Quran translation, ethics, and practicals were postponed by BISE Lahore, Multan, and other boards.

Zahid Mian, Controller of Examinations at BISE Lahore, said that revised dates for the affected exams will be announced soon, with similar notices expected from other education boards. Updates will be shared via official communication platforms.

Meanwhile, the country is observing Youm-e-Tashakur today, as announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, to express gratitude for the armed forces’ defence and success in ‘Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos’.
