The Punjab government has decided to revive the Basant festival while implementing new safety measures to prevent accidents.
A special committee has been set up to coordinate with relevant departments and local communities to ensure smooth celebrations.
One of the key proposals under review includes a two-day motorcycle ban during the festival to prevent mishaps.
Additionally, kite string manufacturers must register with the district administration to ensure that only safe materials are used.
This decision follows persistent appeals from cultural enthusiasts, the kite-flying industry, and business groups, who urged Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to reinstate the festival by forming a dedicated committee.
Basant, once a lively tradition in cities like Lahore, was a major part of Punjab’s cultural heritage, bringing joy to people and boosting the economy through tourism, hospitality, and kite-related businesses.
Its absence in recent years has led to a decline in tourism and negatively impacted small businesses and artisans.
Through this revival, Punjab aims to restore the festive spirit of Basant while ensuring safety and better organization.
