The Punjab government has officially rolled out the “Plastic-Free Punjab Pledge” as part of a wider push to tackle environmental challenges.
The campaign enforces a strict ban on plastic bags that are thinner than 75 microns or smaller than 12×16 inches in size.
Spearheaded by the Punjab Environment Protection Department, the initiative is focused on phasing out single-use plastics to improve air quality and support a healthier environment.
As part of the awareness drive, Punjab’s Secretary for Environment, Salwat Saeed, along with Director General Imran Hamid Sheikh and other senior officials, visited several commercial markets to raise awareness and urge cooperation from business owners.
They stressed the importance of fully implementing the ban and called on vendors to start using environmentally friendly alternatives.
Secretary Saeed described the move as a bold and necessary step toward a greener, healthier future. Highlighting the dangers posed by single-use plastics, she said, “From now on, plastic bags below 75 microns in thickness will neither be produced nor used.”
The government is actively encouraging businesses to transition to sustainable packaging solutions and abandon the use of restricted plastic materials.
