The Punjab government has declared that summer vacations in schools will begin on June 1, though the start date might be moved earlier depending on how hot it gets in the coming days.
School Education Secretary Khalid Nazir Wattoo shared that this decision was made considering student and staff well-being.
“If temperatures increase unusually, holidays could begin a week earlier,” he stated, emphasizing that the health and safety of students, teachers, and parents are the top priority.
This move reflects growing concerns around the impact of climate change, which has led to more intense and frequent heatwaves, particularly in vulnerable countries like Pakistan.
Experts note that rising temperatures are beginning to affect many aspects of life, including education, health, and infrastructure.
Authorities advise schools and families to stay updated, as any changes to the vacation schedule will be shared as needed.
In the meantime, schools have been asked to ensure a supply of clean drinking water, stop all outdoor activities, and encourage students to wear light clothing.
Classrooms should have proper ventilation, working fans or cooling systems, and on-site first aid for heat-related issues.
The PDMA has also stressed coordination with local disaster management teams to make sure timely updates and safety measures are in place, especially as dry, increasingly hot weather continues across the province.
