PM Shehbaz Sharif vows to tackle fake news, misinformation

Karachi: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during a meeting of the Apex Committee for the National Action Plan on Friday, expressed his determination to address the growing issue of misinformation and fake news on social media.

He stressed that tackling digital misinformation is crucial to combating terrorism and extremism in Pakistan.

The PM pointed out that the harm caused by fake information and false news spreading on social media are negatively affecting the country’s image. He highlighted that much of this misleading content originates from individuals outside the country and is intended to mislead the public and destabilize national unity.

As an example, he referred to the recent fake news about the martyrdom of Rangers personnel, stating how such misinformation can break trust and create confusion.

Moreover, the PM emphasized the importance of a coordinated effort to combat these digital threats. He called for collaboration among various stakeholders to develop a strong strategy to counter these challenges.

The government also plans to tackle these issues by developing a framework that will monitor and address fake news. This initiative aims to use technology to protect Pakistan’s online reputation and ensure that the public receives accurate information.
