The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave warning for Punjab, with extremely high temperatures expected between May 15 and May 19.
According to the PDMA, the mercury could rise 4 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal, increasing health risks for the public.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department reports that dry continental winds are prevailing over most regions, contributing to the hot and dry conditions.
Southern Punjab is expected to face the brunt of the heat, with major cities like Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur, and Faisalabad likely to see temperatures hover around 41°C to 42°C on Wednesday. These conditions are expected to persist across the province until at least May 20.
The PDMA has warned that the heatwave may worsen in urban and low-lying areas. However, relief may arrive by the evening of May 19 when a westerly system is forecast to move in, potentially bringing down temperatures and causing isolated showers.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has instructed all commissioners, deputy commissioners, and district officials to stay vigilant and ensure emergency arrangements are in place.
Departments such as Health, School Education, Transport, Local Government, and Rescue 1122 have also been told to take urgent steps to protect the public.
Citizens are urged to stay indoors during peak heat hours, wear light and breathable clothing, cover their heads when going outside, and drink plenty of water.
Authorities have been asked to ensure that clean drinking water is accessible in public areas and that hospitals and mobile health teams are prepared to handle heat-related medical issues.
