Pakistan’s first electricity-generating road completed in Lahore

Lahore introduced Pakistan’s first electricity generating smart road, marking a significant milestone in durable urban infrastructure. The newly completed Route 47 spans 4.5 kilometres through the heart of the city.

This key route will connect Kalma Chowk, Ferozepur Road, and the Lahore Ring Road. Built at a cost of approximately Rs9 billion ($32 million) by the Punjab Central Business District Development Authority, this innovative roadway features multiple advanced technologies.

The project’s most notable innovation involves solar panels installed along pedestrian walkways, designed to generate up to one megawatt of electricity while providing shade. The road also features a nearly one kilometre long flyover.

The flyover will dedicate lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, demonstrating a commitment to multimodal transportation. Engineers will install specialised drainage systems to prevent water accumulation during heavy rainfall.

Imran Amin, CEO of CBD Punjab, emphasised the road’s importance as the centrepiece of Pakistan’s most modern commercial district, meeting international standards for intelligent infrastructure.

“This represents Pakistan’s first smart road capable of energy generation,” Amin stated, highlighting the project’s potential to serve as a model for future urban development. The completion of Route 47 reflects Lahore’s growing focus on generating renewable energy solutions with urban planning initiatives.
