Pakistan calls for action against Afghan terrorist refugees in UNSC

Pakistan asked for strong international action against terrorist havens in Afghanistan during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting, citing cross-border attacks and increasing militant activity concerns.

The Pakistani delegate to the UN demanded that the Afghan government live up to its obligations under international treaties and disband terrorist groups using their soil as a launchpad for attacks in Pakistan.

Pakistan has long accused the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militant organizations of utilizing Afghan soil as a platform to carry out attacks within Pakistan.

The appeal is made in the wake of an increase in fatal attacks against Pakistani security personnel, especially in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces.

Intelligence indicates that militants are reorganizing in Afghanistan, exploiting the nation’s weak security environment.

Pakistan has been pursuing diplomatic efforts to put pressure on Afghanistan’s Taliban-led administration to act against these groups.

Progress has been slow, though, with Afghan officials frequently denying the existence of terrorist camps within their territory.

In the UNSC, Pakistan also called for the international community to take a more active role in counterterrorism in the region. Without firm action, experts say that terrorism may destabilize South Asia once again.

This new development indicates Pakistan’s exasperation with the continued security threats and its resolve to press for more international participation in the fight against terrorism.
