New gas reserves discovered in Sindh’s Sujawal block

Mari Energies Limited (MPCL), previously known as Mari Petroleum, has reported a major gas discovery at the Soho-1 exploratory well located in the Sujawal Block of Sindh.

As the sole operator with full ownership of the block, MPCL shared that the well is producing 30.01 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD) at a choke size of 64/64″ with a wellhead pressure of 1,482.5 psi, according to the report.

At a smaller 32/64″ choke, the flow rate was 18.84 MMSCFD with a much higher pressure of 3,447.8 psi.

This is the first time gas has been successfully discovered in the Lower Goru formation within this block, a layer previously thought to be non-productive. Additional tests on other layers are underway to assess the total potential of the site.

In a related development, another major oil and gas find was recently made in the Waziristan Block of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

MPCL reported that the Spin Wam-1 well is currently producing around 20.485 MMSCFD of gas and 117 barrels of light crude oil daily, with a pressure of 3,431 psi at the wellhead.

MPCL has a 55% interest in the Waziristan Block, while OGDCL holds 35%, and Orient Petroleum has the remaining 10%.

Industry experts view these back-to-back discoveries as promising signs for Pakistan’s energy future, potentially helping the country move toward energy independence and reducing its dependence on fuel imports.
