ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a rain and flood alert for various regions across the country.
The alert specifically highlights the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) in Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, and Kumrat Valley, due to heavy rainfall and unusually high temperatures.
These conditions increase the threat of sudden floods, road damage, isolated thunderstorms, and travel disruptions in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, rapid glacier and snowmelt combined with rain have heightened the risk of GLOFs in high-altitude areas, potentially causing river levels to rise and damaging infrastructure, including transport and power lines.
Azad Kashmir is also expected to receive steady rainfall, raising concerns over flooding in low-lying zones, blocked drainage, and transport issues.
Punjab is likely to see widespread showers and thunderstorms, particularly in elevated areas like Murree and Galiyat, as well as parts of central Punjab.
These weather conditions may result in urban flooding, power outages, structural damage, and reduced road visibility due to dust and rain. Islamabad is expected to face similar conditions in the next 24 to 48 hours.
In Balochistan, scattered rain, storms, and strong winds are predicted, which could damage weak infrastructure, disrupt visibility, and cause power failures.
Meanwhile, Sindh is bracing for widespread heavy rain in districts including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpur Khas, Tharparkar, Badin, Umerkot, and Jacobabad. The forecast raises the risk of urban flooding, traffic blockages, and damage to fragile buildings and power lines.
