NDMA issues flood alert for major cities as heavy rain expected

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood warning for several major cities across Pakistan, cautioning that heavy rains expected between June 25 and July 1 could trigger urban flooding.

Cities on high alert include Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Bagh, Rawalakot, and Muzaffarabad.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms and heavy showers in different parts of the country over the next five days.

In light of this, the NDMA has urged people living in the affected areas to take necessary precautions for their safety.

In Sindh, areas such as Sukkur, Larkana, Hyderabad, Karachi, Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Thatta, and Badin are expected to receive thunderstorms and rain from June 25 to 28.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is also likely to be affected, with expected rain and thunderstorms in Chitral, Dir, Haripur, Kohat, Kohistan, Khyber, Kurram, Mansehra, Nowshera, Malakand, Abbottabad, Bannu, Buner, Hazara, Peshawar, Swabi, and Swat through July 1.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, places like Astore, Skardu, Hunza, Shigar, Diamer, Nagar, Ghizer, and Ghanche are also likely to experience stormy weather.

The NDMA further warned that the risk of landslides is high in the hilly regions of Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and KP.

Authorities have advised the public to avoid standing near unstable structures, trees, electric poles, and billboards during stormy weather.

“NDMA also warned of possible landslides in the mountainous regions of Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and KP.

People are urged to stay away from weak structures, trees, electric poles, and billboards during storms, and park vehicles in safe areas to avoid damage. Visibility may also drop during storms, increasing the risk of accidents.”
