NADRA closes CNIC service counters at Post Offices nationwide

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has reportedly discontinued all identity card-related services at General Post Offices (GPOs) across Pakistan.

This decision comes after three years of operation, with officials citing low public response and a lack of awareness, as per the report.

The initiative, launched in partnership with Pakistan Post, was designed to offer convenient access to CNIC-related services, including renewals, address modifications, and marital status updates.

However, NADRA has now instructed the closure of all 83 service counters nationwide, including 10 in Karachi.

Employees have been directed to return all equipment and deposit collected fees, while any CNICs that have already been processed must be delivered to applicants before the counters are dismantled.

A NADRA spokesperson confirmed that the equipment from these counters would be relocated to union councils in the next fiscal year to improve local service accessibility.

Although the initiative aimed to ease congestion at NADRA centers, officials admitted that it failed to attract sufficient public engagement. A planned awareness campaign was never launched, leaving many unaware of the GPO service.

This decision effectively brings a premature end to the 10-year agreement between NADRA and Pakistan Post, closing a project that never fully realized its potential.
