Microsoft shuts down operations in Pakistan after 25 years

Microsoft has officially ended its presence in Pakistan, closing a chapter that spanned over two decades in the country’s tech landscape.

The few remaining employees were recently notified that the company is shutting down its operations completely.

Jawwad Rehman, the founding Country Manager who led Microsoft Pakistan for seven years, described the move as the “end of an era.”

Reflecting on his time with the company, he said, “It wasn’t just a job, it was a calling. Those years were about uplifting people, forming partnerships, earning trust, and creating opportunity for a generation of Pakistani youth.”

Throughout its time in the country, Microsoft contributed significantly to digital development, including the establishment of hundreds of computer labs in underserved regions.

The company’s departure comes amid rising economic challenges in Pakistan and a widening digital gap.

Once seen as a promising destination for tech investment, the country has recently witnessed several global firms scaling back their operations.

In 2022, Microsoft had considered expanding its footprint in Pakistan but later redirected its plans to Vietnam, reportedly due to political instability.

ProPakistani reached out to Microsoft for an official response, but had not received a statement at the time of reporting.
