Karachi is likely to face severe water shortage in the coming days due to a leakage in an 84-inch diameter water pipeline.
Given the scale of the damaged mainline, large sections of the city are expected to experience a severe water crisis in the upcoming week.
Taking advantage of the situation, water tanker operators in Clifton and DHA have already raised their service charges.
Meanwhile, repair work on the pipeline near Ghazi Goth Safoora began on Thursday and is being carried out around the clock. Completion is expected within four days.
Karachi’s usual daily water supply stands at 650 million gallons per day (MGD), but the ongoing repair work will lead to a shortfall of 200 MGD, reducing the available supply to 450 MGD.
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has announced that water supply to several areas will be partially suspended during repairs.
These include NEPA, Liaquatabad, Jamshed Town, Jinnah Town, Saddar, Old City Area, PIB Colony, Hyderabad Colony, Landhi, Korangi, and DHA.
An investigation revealed that the damaged pipeline has three leakage points, potentially requiring pipe replacements. The pipeline, known as Siphon 19, is one of 20 main lines supplying water to Karachi.
Once the water supply is halted, a thorough inspection will be conducted to check for additional leaks along the line.
