On Monday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) directed all schools to re-register within a month and warned that institutions failing to follow the school bus policy will face suspension of their registration.
The order came from LHC Justice Shahid Karim during a hearing on petitions related to the ongoing smog crisis and efforts to address it.
Justice Shahid Karim instructed the Director-General of the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to review the condition of the city’s roads and develop a traffic plan to reduce congestion, particularly in these worsening smog conditions.
Justice Karim appreciated the government’s efforts to address the smog issue and stressed the need for strict implementation. He said, “The matter of environmental protection is extremely serious, and further delay should not be allowed.”
During today’s proceedings, Secretary of School Education Khalid Nazir presented a set of proposed regulations for private schools. Under the new guidelines, schools will only be eligible for registration if they operate buses, while newly established schools will be required to provide transportation services for their students, according to ARY.
Justice Karim stated, “The issue of school buses is very serious,” and stressed the need to implement the orders before the next season.
The Court also expressed concerns about the poor enforcement of traffic rules near bus stations and housing societies along Multan Road and called for immediate action to rectify the situation.
