Lahore to get cash-back machines for plastic bottles

As part of the Chief Minister’s Green Credits Program, the Punjab government has partnered with a private firm to begin recycling single-use plastic waste throughout Lahore.

Next month, recycling machines developed using Chinese technology will be installed in four prominent universities and several busy commercial areas.

These machines, made locally, let people exchange plastic bottles for instant green credits and cash rewards.

The process is straightforward: users press Button A, insert the used bottle, enter their phone number, and then press Button B. The machine then displays the green credits earned, which users can also monitor through a mobile app.

According to company chairman Gulfam Abid, Lahore generates about 500 tons of plastic bottle waste daily. The collected plastic will be repurposed to produce bricks, paving blocks, and to aid in road maintenance.

Participants can earn up to Rs1,000 by depositing either twenty 1.5-litre bottles or forty half-litre bottles. The initiative also includes 18,000 scrap collectors in the city, who can register through the app and have their bottles picked up directly in exchange for cash.
