Karachi declares public holiday on June 19 for urs of Abdullah Shah Ghazi

KARACHI: Residents of Karachi will get a day off on Thursday, June 19, in observance of the annual Urs of the respected Sufi saint Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi, as announced by Mayor Murtaza Wahab.

In a statement on Monday, Barrister Murtaza Wahab declared a public holiday across the city for this special religious occasion.

A formal notice from the Senior Director of Human Resources Management (HRM) of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) confirmed that “all offices under the jurisdiction of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) shall remain closed on the above occasion, except offices providing essential services.”

According to the official notification, “The Competent Authority, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, is pleased to declare a local holiday on 22″ Zill-Hajj, 1446 A.H., corresponding to Thursday, 19th June 2025, on the occasion of the Annual Urs of Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi (R.A.), in accordance with Council Resolution No. 594, dated 27-01-2005, passed by the City Council, Karachi.”

Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi, a prominent 8th-century Sufi saint believed to have arrived from Saudi Arabia, is buried in Clifton, Karachi.

His shrine is a well-known spiritual landmark and draws thousands of followers each year, especially during his Urs, which is marked with religious gatherings and prayers.
