Karachi bans taxis, rickshaws in markets to ease Eid rush

To tackle Karachi’s growing traffic congestion ahead of Eidul Fitr, the Karachi Traffic Police have rolled out a new traffic plan to ease overcrowding in major shopping areas.

Under the plan, taxis and rickshaws, including ride-hailing services, will not be allowed in certain high-traffic zones.

The restrictions apply to busy areas such as Teen Talwar, Tariq Road, and Hyderi Market, with commuters advised to use alternative routes like Clifton Bridge, Race Course, and Khaliq uz Zaman Road.

Additionally, roads leading to Saddar, Fawara Chowk, GPO, Singer Chowk, Zaibunnisa Street, Jama Cloth, and Eidgah Chowk will also have vehicle restrictions.

Traffic from the Millennium area will be diverted through Millennium Bridge towards Nipa, while commercial vehicles will be redirected towards Ship Owners College and Landi Kotal Chowrangi.

These measures are part of the traffic police’s broader efforts to manage the expected surge in shoppers and vehicles during the holiday season.

Meanwhile, Eidul Fitr 2025 in Pakistan is likely to be observed on March 31, with a possible extended holiday from March 29 to April 6.

Eidul Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and is determined by the sighting of the Shawwal moon. The Ruet-e-Hilal Research Council expects the crescent to be visible on March 30, making Eid probable on March 31.

Since Eid falls on a Monday, experts predict a five-day public holiday from March 29 to April 2, which could extend to nine days if Thursday and Friday are also declared holidays. However, the final decision will depend on the official moon sighting.
