K-P faces extreme heatwave, authorities issue heatstroke warning

Authorities in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have sounded the alarm over an approaching heatwave, with temperatures expected to spike sharply across the region in the coming days.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) noted that most districts will see a steady rise in daytime temperatures starting Monday, Express News reported.

The forecast predicts temperatures climbing by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius, accompanied by dry and dusty winds during the afternoon and evening hours.

The Meteorological Office cautioned that the prolonged heat and lack of rain could raise the chances of heatstroke and put pressure on already limited water resources.

The PDMA has instructed district administrations and all concerned departments to implement safety measures.

People have been advised to steer clear of direct sunlight from 10 am to 5 pm, with a special emphasis on protecting children and the elderly during peak hours.

Farmers are encouraged to ensure their crops are adequately watered, while the Health Department has been asked to keep heatstroke treatment centres active and ready. Medical and rescue teams have also been put on standby.

Animal care has not been overlooked, officials have issued guidance to protect both livestock and pets from the scorching weather.

Motorists have been urged to inspect their vehicles for proper coolant levels and tyre pressure before hitting the road.

The PDMA confirmed that its emergency operations centre remains active around the clock and that any emergencies can be reported via the helpline at 1700.
