Intense heatwave to hit Pakistan, temperatures expected to surge by 7°C

Pakistan is expected to face intense heat over the coming days, with temperatures likely to soar up to 7°C above normal levels, lasting for about 3 to 4 days.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast that a high-pressure system will settle over most regions of the country starting May 15.

This weather pattern is likely to cause daytime temperatures to rise between 4°C to 6°C above the usual range in the southern regions, including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, from May 15 to May 20.

Meanwhile, in the northern and central parts of the country, including central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, temperatures are expected to be even higher, ranging between 5°C to 7°C above normal from May 15 to May 19.

A shift in weather is anticipated as a westerly system is set to move into the upper regions on the evening or night of May 19.

This system may bring rain, gusty winds, and isolated heavy showers along with hailstorms in areas such as Kashmir, Islamabad, the Pothohar region (including northeast Punjab), upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan on May 19 and 20.

Possible Impacts and Precautionary Measures:

With the onset of the heatwave, the public, especially children, women, and the elderly, is urged to stay cautious. It’s important to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours and to stay well-hydrated.

Farmers should plan their agricultural activities with the weather in mind and ensure proper care for their livestock. The rising temperatures may also speed up snowmelt in the northern regions. Everyone is encouraged to use water wisely across all sectors.
