Imam-ul-Haq forced to retire hurt after jaw injury in final ODI against NZ

Pakistani opening batter Imam-ul-Haq had to leave the field after suffering an injury during Pakistan’s chase against New Zealand in the final ODI of the three-match series at Bay Oval on Saturday.

According to the team management, Imam was hit on the jaw by “an accidental throw from a New Zealand fielder” and failed the concussion test that followed. Usman Khan was later brought in as his replacement.

Initially, Imam received treatment at the ground’s medical centre before being taken to Tauranga Hospital for further evaluation. The team’s spokesperson confirmed he would undergo a comprehensive medical check-up.

A later update stated that Imam had sustained a mild injury to his face while batting. A CT scan of his head and face came back clear. Following medical assessment, he was diagnosed with a mild concussion.

“Imam is feeling better now and remains in stable condition. The specialists at Tauranga Hospital have advised a two-week rest from all sporting activities. He has also been declared fit for air travel. The Pakistan team management and medical panel will continue to monitor his recovery closely,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, New Zealand completed a clean sweep over Pakistan in the ODI series, winning the final match by 43 runs. The game had been shortened to 42 overs per side due to rain the night before, which also affected the outfield.

Pakistan had previously lost the first ODI in Napier by 73 runs and the second in Hamilton by 84 runs. This defeat followed their 4-1 loss to New Zealand in the T20I series.
