LAHORE: At least four people lost their lives and 19 others were injured in various rain-related incidents across Punjab on Thursday, as heavy monsoon showers swept through Lahore and several other cities.
The first major spell of monsoon rain brought widespread disruption, flooding roads, causing lengthy traffic jams, and triggering power outages. The downpour and lightning also inflicted significant damage to infrastructure and homes.
According to a statement from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), two individuals died in Okara and Bahawalnagar due to the collapse of weak or damaged buildings, while two others drowned in Jhelum.
The rains impacted 13 mud houses and aging structures, highlighting the vulnerability of poorly maintained buildings during the wet season.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has instructed authorities to ensure the injured receive proper medical care, and confirmed that compensation will be provided to the families of the deceased.
“Assistance will also be ensured to the families of the deceased under the government policy,” he stated.
He urged citizens to remain cautious as the monsoon spell is expected to last until July 1. “Citizens are requested to take precautionary measures during wet and windy conditions,” he added.
