Karachi: The Federal Government has taken a step to provide relief to electricity consumers and has decided to refund overbilling charges in this month’s electricity bills, according to reports.

The federal government said that the reduced tariff will be applied to the extra units billed  under the pro-rata system, as per the reports from private news channels.

The tariff for extra units will be reduced as per the pro-rata system, according to the decision. Now the consumer in the protected category will pay 13 rupees per unit rather than 27 rupees per unit.

The excess charges will be adjusted, consumers will get credit in return, and the excess overpaid amount will be refunded. Moreover, it is also reported that NEPRA has decided to remove penalties for late bill payments.

It is stated that the extra units were charged by consumers under the pro-rate system. The action is taken and investigated by the National Accountability Burea (NAB) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), as per reports from private news channels.

It is further revealed that the readings were missing from the bills and Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) failed to provide a clear explanation for this issue.

Previously, PM Shehbaz Sharif provided relief to consumers by extending 10 days in deadline for bill payments so the Power Division directed all power distribution companies to follow this procedure and increase the deadline to the July and August 2024 bills.
