Govt announces massive increase in petrol, diesel prices from June 16

The federal government has announced a significant hike in fuel prices for the final fortnight of the 2024-25 fiscal year.

As per the updated rates, petrol will now cost Rs258.43 per liter after a rise of Rs4.80, while high-speed diesel has gone up by Rs7.95, setting its new price at Rs262.59 per liter. These changes will be effective from June 16, 2025.

In the previous bi-weekly review, petrol was increased by Rs1 per liter, while the price of high-speed diesel remained the same.

Although the government does not apply any general sales tax (GST) on fuel, it collects almost Rs94 per liter through other charges.

This includes a Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) of Rs78.02 on petrol and Rs77.01 on diesel, plus an additional Rs16 per liter in customs duty for both.

Oil companies and dealers also receive Rs17 per liter as part of their distribution and sales margins.
