Five Pakistani cities record feels-like temperatures over 50°C

Several cities across Pakistan experienced dangerously high heat index levels on Saturday, prompting serious warnings from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) about heat-related health risks.

As per figures from PMD’s National Weather Forecasting Centre, cities like Sibbi, Multan, and Bahawalpur faced extreme heat stress by mid-morning on June 21.

Bahawalpur reported the highest feels-like temperature at a scorching 52.7°C, while Sibbi and Multan followed closely with 52.2°C and 52.0°C, respectively.

Other regions also endured sweltering conditions. Peshawar registered a heat index of 50.8°C, Dera Ismail Khan hit 50.3°C, and Sargodha and Faisalabad recorded 49.8°C each.

According to the PMD’s scale, a heat index between 41°C and 54°C falls into the “Danger” category, meaning prolonged exposure could result in heat-related illnesses. Any value above 54°C is considered “Extreme Danger,” while 32°C to 41°C falls under “Extreme Caution.”

In light of these alarming temperatures, authorities are urging the public to remain indoors during peak heat hours, drink plenty of fluids, and take regular breaks if working outside to prevent heat exhaustion and related complications.
