First solar eclipse of 2025 takes place today

The first solar eclipse of 2025 will occur today, Saturday, though it will not be visible in Pakistan, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

The eclipse will start at 1:51 PM Pakistan Standard Time and will conclude at 5:44 PM. However, only certain regions, including parts of Europe, West Africa, North America, and the Atlantic, will be able to witness it to varying degrees, depending on their location.

This celestial event marks the first solar eclipse of the year and has generated interest from astronomers and space enthusiasts worldwide.

The next solar eclipse is expected to take place between the night of September 21 and 22, which, like this one, will also be a partial eclipse.

A solar eclipse happens when the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun, either partially or completely obstructing sunlight, as explained by the BBC. The degree to which the Sun is covered determines the type of eclipse visible.

Experts urge caution when observing such celestial events. “Looking directly at the Sun without protection, even during a partial eclipse, can lead to serious eye injuries, including permanent blindness.”

To safely view the eclipse, people should use specially designed solar viewing glasses that block harmful ultraviolet rays and reduce brightness to safe levels.
