Fire at Karachi’s Landhi export zone contained after 36 hours

A massive fire that broke out at Karachi’s Landhi Export Processing Zone has now been brought under control, according to an official from the zone.

The Secretary of the export processing zone confirmed the blaze was extinguished and stated, “The cooling process could take two to three days,” as operations to stabilize the area continue.

The fire, which raged for over 36 hours, caused severe destruction to four factories, including oil and cosmetics manufacturing units.

A fire brigade official earlier reported that the fire had already destroyed three factories and was proving difficult to extinguish, requiring the deployment of 10 fire tenders.

The incident, which began early Sunday morning, left at least five individuals injured, including firefighters and rescue personnel.

The fire originated in a cosmetics factory and spread rapidly to nearby units due to the presence of highly flammable materials, resulting in substantial property damage.

Rescue 1122 teams and emergency services responded immediately, working through intense conditions.

Officials have declared three of the affected factories unsafe, while a fourth has also sustained damage. Though the fire has been put out, work is still ongoing to ensure the area is completely secure.
