Extreme heat to persist in Punjab, Lahore may hit 45°C

Lahore and most parts of Punjab are expected to remain under the grip of intense heatwaves through Wednesday and the rest of the week, with no immediate relief in sight.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reports that dry continental air continues to dominate much of the country, while a strong high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere over central and southern Pakistan is likely to persist for the next four days. This combination is driving the ongoing heatwave conditions.

As a result, scorching temperatures will continue in Lahore and across Punjab over the next several days.

Daytime temperatures in southern Punjab are expected to be 4°C to 6°C above normal, while central and upper Punjab may see temperatures rise 5°C to 7°C above the seasonal average. Gusty winds are also expected in parts of central and southern Punjab during this period.

In Lahore, temperatures are forecast to range between 42°C and 44°C on Wednesday and rise slightly to 43°C to 45°C on Thursday.

The heatwave has already made its mark, with Lahore and several other districts experiencing extreme heat over the past 24 hours. Rahim Yar Khan, Bhakkar, and Dera Ghazi Khan were among the hottest, each recording a high of 47°C.

In Lahore, the maximum temperature hit 43°C, with relative humidity in the evening recorded at 24 per cent.
