The liver transplant procedure at Dow University was supervised by esteemed international surgeons, including Professor John LaMattina, who has previously worked in Pakistan, and Professor John Fung, who visited the country for the first time.
Both experts, affiliated with the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine, shared their expertise with Dow’s liver transplant team, led by Dr. Jehanzaib Haider, offering insights into advanced surgical techniques and global trends in transplantation.
Vice Chancellor of Dow University, Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishi, lauded the medical team for the successful transplant and acknowledged the contributions of the visiting specialists.
Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Jehan Ara Hassan, who attended the live procedure, shared details about the recipient, a 42-year-old Shahdadkot resident suffering from liver failure due to chronic hepatitis B and D.
His 23-year-old nephew selflessly donated 750 grams of his liver, enabling the lifesaving surgery.
Professor Hassan also emphasized that with the backing of the Sindh government, Dow University has performed 190 liver transplants, all free of cost.
She pointed out that cultural and religious beliefs influence attitudes toward organ donation, prompting the university to work on a proposal for an organ donation bank to increase awareness and accessibility.
Additionally, she announced that Dow University of Health Sciences is set to host Pakistan’s first International Conference on Transplantation later this week.
