KARACHI: At least five people lost their lives and several others were injured when a six-storey residential building collapsed in Karachi’s Lyari area on Friday, according to a report, citing rescue officials.
The building, located in the Baghdadi neighborhood, came crashing down unexpectedly, trapping many residents beneath the debris.
Emergency teams rushed to the site immediately after receiving the alert, and search and rescue operations were swiftly launched.
So far, five individuals, including three women, have been pulled from the rubble and taken to the hospital for treatment. A spokesperson for Chhipa Welfare confirmed that “five people have lost their lives and at least 20 to 25 people are still trapped under the rubble.”
Rescue teams also reported that a nearby building had sustained damage due to the collapse, raising further safety concerns in the densely populated area.
Search operations remain underway, as authorities work tirelessly to find and assist those still trapped.
Just four days earlier, another six-storey building in the Kharadar area of Karachi experienced a partial collapse.
That incident occurred when the rooftop water tank gave way, damaging a connecting corridor and staircases inside the building. Although no lives were lost in that case, several residents were temporarily stranded on the upper floors.
