Severe heatwave expected across Pakistan from May 25

A strong high-pressure system is likely to form in the upper atmosphere from May 25 and become stronger by May 26, bringing an intense heatwave across the country.

Meteorological authorities have warned that moderate to severe heatwave conditions may continue from May 25 to May 31.

During this period, temperatures in many areas are expected to stay well above normal levels, rising around 5°C to 7°C higher than average. In northern and central districts including Peshawar, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Lahore, daytime temperatures may reach between 42°C and 45°C.

In cooler northern and hilly regions such as Malakand, Hazara Division and Gilgit Baltistan, temperatures are expected to remain 5°C to 7°C above normal, with maximum temperatures ranging from 38°C to 40°C.

More severe heat is forecast for southern and central plain areas where temperatures could rise 4°C to 6°C above average. Districts including Sukkur, Jacobabad, Hyderabad, Multan and Bahawalpur are expected to record temperatures between 47°C and 50°C.

In Karachi, very hot weather is also likely during the forecast period, with temperatures expected to stay between 35°C and 38°C.

Officials added that night temperatures are also expected to remain higher than usual, providing little relief after sunset.
