Punjab announces five new vehicle number series from May 2026

The Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department Punjab, has announced that five new vehicle registration number series will be introduced from May 2026. The move comes in response to the rising demand for preferred and customized number plates across the province.

Along with regular numbers for general use, the department will set aside premium or “fancy” numbers for an e-auction system. This will allow vehicle owners to bid for special and high-value numbers.

This development comes after an important policy change earlier this year. In February 2026, the department decided to end the centralized production of government-issued number plates.

Following this, the Punjab Traffic Police were directed not to fine people using plates made by private vendors.

As long as the number plates follow the official Punjab format, vehicle owners no longer need to wait for government-produced plates. The step is meant to clear the large backlog of pending plates and remove extra manufacturing costs for the public.

These measures, including the new number series and the approval of privately made plates, are aimed at improving the system and making things easier for vehicle owners.

Anyone planning to register a new vehicle next month will be able to choose from the new series and get their plates made through an approved private vendor without delay.
